Anthony Rizzo, a first baseman for the New York Yankees, had gone 12-for-60 with five home runs and 12 strikeouts in his previous 17 games before starting Monday’s game against the Tampa Bay Rays.
His frustration and annoyance finally reached a breaking point.
In the bottom of the third inning, Ryan Yarbrough hit Rizzo with an inside curveball from the left side of the plate. Home plate umpire D.J. Reyburn ruled against what looked like a clear hit by a pitch because Rizzo didn’t move out of the way enough.
Rizzo was upset by the call, but he stayed on his feet long enough to get back into the batter’s box.
At some point, the first baseman would strike out.
Rizzo took out his anger on his helmet when he got to the dugout. He hit it a few times before crossing to the other side.
Rizzo didn’t leave the game. He did hit his 18th double of the season against the Rays’ starting pitcher, Jalen Beeks.
But after five innings, the Yankees were still scoreless. On Sunday, they were blanked by the Boston Red Sox.
Since July 31, New York has lost 10 of their last 13 games.
