It took longer than anyone wanted it, but the Yankees got another win.
The Cubs traveled to New York on Friday night to meet up with their old friend Anthony Rizzo and the Yankees. Chicago did an excellent job of keeping New York off the scoreboard, but they failed to generate offense and lost a 13-inning marathon.
Both starting pitchers were at the top of their games early on, trading zeros in the first three innings. Unfortunately, Cubs starter Wade Miley appeared to injure his left shoulder again while warming up for the fourth inning and was forced out of the game.
Former Cubs pawn Gleyber Torres jumped over Daniel Norris’ first throw and hit right field. The much-maligned Jason Heyward drove Luis Severino surprisingly deep for the game-winning solo shot to left field in the fifth, which coincided with the same night Clint Frazier was called up for action.
The bullpens were outstanding for both sides and the game ended in a tie for extra innings. Neither team was able to create numerous scoring opportunities through Day 13, as the free runner was in second place when Jose Trevino struck a narrow goal against Alec Mills to give the Yankees a 2-1 win.
