Manager Aaron Boone refuses to accept that Andrew Benintendi won’t be available for the rest of the season. The outfielder requires surgery, which may happen on Tuesday, to repair a broken wrist bone.
Boone does not believe that the procedure will put an end to Benintendi’s season.
The Yankees determined on Monday that Benintendi would have right wrist surgery on Tuesday. According to the team sources, the player had fractured the hook of his hamate bone and surgery was the only way to fix it. This decision was reached after the Yankees spoke with specialists on Monday.
However, Boone, who claims to have undergone the “same procedure” in 2001 and was back playing baseball in a month, is keeping the same level of optimism for Benintendi.
“Everyone’s different, every surgery heals a little bit different,” Boone spoke to the media following his team’s 5-2 home victory over the Twins on Monday. He added, “I think the possibility of him returning is still in play. You just never know how surgery and the healing goes.”
Since being acquired from the Royals in a trade, Benintendi has played 33 games with the Yankees and has a .254 batting average with a .734 OPS. Benintendi will become a free agent at the end of this season.
On Monday, Aroldis Chapman, who is recovering from an infected leg wound caused by a tattoo, threw off flat ground and is expected to go up to a mound this week. On Thursday, the reliever could be activated off the injured list, but it is possible that he is not yet ready.
Luis Severino, who suffered a strained lat, will play for Double-A Somerset in Hartford, Connecticut, on Wednesday in his next rehab game. The right-handed pitcher is likely to throw around 60 pitches in what could be his last start before coming off the 60-day injury list.
Between the top & bottom of the second inning, the Yankees showed a short video about Gary Sanchez and Gio Urshela. The crowd cheered. Anthony Banda, a left-handed pitcher, was taken off the team’s 40-man roster and sent to the Triple-A team the RailRiders.
