As the New York Yankees navigate a pivotal offseason, their primary focus remains on re-signing superstar outfielder Juan Soto. However, addressing infield vacancies is equally critical, especially with the potential availability of St. Louis Cardinals’ third baseman, Nolan Arenado.

Reports from The Athletic’s Katie Woo suggest a growing industry belief that Arenado may be on the trading block this offseason. Notably, Arenado has expressed a willingness to shift to first base to accommodate team needs, enhancing his appeal to clubs seeking roster flexibility.

“Now, as the Cardinals shift directions and contemplate trading Arenado, the 10-time Gold Glove-winning third baseman is willing to play first base, or at least less at third, to create roster flexibility for a potential new team, league sources briefed on his situation say,” he wrote. “The Cardinals have been exploring Arenado’s potential trade market for weeks. Those conversations, preliminary in nature, have yet to yield any substantive progress. Still, a few teams have expressed initial interest, per a league source. As the winter meetings approach, talks are likely to intensify, and there is a growing sense throughout the industry that Arenado will be on the move.”

CBS Sports’ Matt Snyder identifies the Yankees as a prime destination for Arenado, stating, “They have an opening at first base after letting Anthony Rizzo walk in free agency. They could also put Arenado at third and play Jazz Chisholm Jr. at second. Such a move would improve the Yankees’ defense—which proved to be their undoing in Game 5 of the World Series.”

As the offseason progresses, the Yankees must weigh the benefits of adding a veteran like Arenado against other potential moves. His availability presents an opportunity to bolster the infield with a player renowned for both defensive excellence and offensive capability.

Should the Yankees sign Arenado?

The Yankees’ interest in Arenado aligns with their broader strategy to enhance both offense and defense. Acquiring him would allow Jazz Chisholm Jr. to return to his natural position at second base, thereby solidifying the infield. With Anthony Rizzo’s departure leaving a void at first base, Arenado’s readiness to transition could fill that gap effectively. Additionally, Arenado’s right-handed power bat would complement the lineup, especially if Soto remains with the team.

In 2024, Arenado’s offensive numbers dipped slightly, with a .272 batting average, .325 on-base percentage, and .394 slugging percentage, alongside 16 home runs and 71 RBIs over 152 games. Despite this, his defensive prowess remained exceptional, recording 10 Outs Above Average last season. His consistent performance over the years underscores his potential value to the Yankees’ roster.

Financially, Arenado is contracted for $52 million over the next three years, a manageable figure for a player of his caliber. At 34, he continues to demonstrate durability and skill, making him a viable option for teams seeking experienced infield talent.

However, Yankee Stadium’s dimensions may not favor Arenado’s hitting style, as he seldom targets right field. This factor requires careful consideration to ensure his offensive contributions align with the team’s dynamics.

In summary, while re-signing Juan Soto remains a priority, the potential acquisition of Nolan Arenado offers a strategic avenue to address infield needs. His experience, defensive acumen, and consistent performance make him a compelling option as the Yankees aim to strengthen their roster for the upcoming season.

Integrating Arenado into a lineup featuring Aaron Judge, and potentially Juan Soto, could rejuvenate his offensive production, providing the protection needed to thrive.

As the Yankees strategize for the upcoming season, balancing the pursuit of Soto with the opportunity to bolster their infield through a potential Arenado acquisition could be instrumental in shaping a championship-contending roster.
