Although New York Yankees captain Aaron Judge had MVP-level numbers in May, Bob Nightengale of USA TODAY reported that some Major League Baseball executives had voiced apprehension regarding Judge’s physical condition and capacity to play every day without a rest day.
Why have MLB executives expressed concerns?

One of the reasons the Yankees missed the playoffs in 2023 was Aaron Judge’s absence due to injury. This raises a valid question: how sustainable is his performance under the stress of playing center field daily? Even with his standout form, there is growing unease within baseball circles about the demands on Judge’s body.
Aaron Judge‘s imposing size (6-foot-7 and 282 pounds) makes him an unusual choice for center field, a position usually reserved for smaller, more agile players. His past injuries, including a ligament tear in his right big toe last season, add to the concerns about his durability.
The Yankees brought in outfielders Alex Verdugo and Juan Soto in the offseason and also added Trent Grisham in the Soto deal, seemingly to help ease Judge’s load. However, with designated hitter Giancarlo Stanton also needing playing time, finding ways to give Judge more rest has been tricky.
Yankees legend voices concerns on Aaron Judge
Yankees legend Bernie Williams has also voiced concerns about overworking Judge in center field, emphasizing the need to manage his playing time to keep him healthy in the long run.
Despite these worries, Judge’s offensive contributions have been crucial for the Yankees. He has posted the highest OPS in the American League since August 4, 2023. With the team aiming for a deep postseason run, it’s clear that managing Judge’s health and performance is critical.
As the Yankees continue their strong campaign with a 37-19 record, Judge’s role remains vital to their success. Balancing his on-field contributions with maintaining his health will be critical as the season progresses.

At this point, the Yankees have almost a day a week as an off day from now until the end of the season. Throw in that they give him at least one day a week as the DH, what is there really to worry about, except him playing in Toronto’s or Tampa’s ballpark.
