SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Aaron Judge is one of the most feared hitters on the planet. He has three American League MVP awards on his mantle. He hit 62 home runs in a single season. He is the captain of the New York Yankees and, now, the captain of Team USA heading into the 2026 World Baseball Classic.
None of that stopped baseball fans from roasting him on social media this week.
Before Team USA’s first exhibition game Tuesday against the San Francisco Giants in Scottsdale, a video of Judge’s pregame speech to his star-studded roster went viral. MLB posted the clip on its social channels Monday night. By Tuesday morning, the reactions were pouring in, and most of them were not kind.
What Judge told his Team USA teammates
Judge stood in front of a room packed with All-Stars, MVP winners and Cy Young Award recipients. The roster includes Bobby Witt Jr., Bryce Harper, Paul Skenes, Tarik Skubal, Kyle Schwarber, Gunnar Henderson, Alex Bregman and Cal Raleigh. It is one of the most talented collections of players ever assembled for international baseball.
Judge addressed the group about sacrifice, unity and the goal of bringing home a gold medal for the United States. Team USA lost to Japan in the 2023 WBC final and has won the tournament just once in its five editions since 2006.
In the video posted by MLB, Judge can be heard saying:
“I think honestly, within this room, you are the hardest working-working mother-f—ers in the game in this room. And when we step out on that field, I want that to be our standard. So when teams see us preparing, they see us warming up, like even in the games, man, that standard of being the hardest-working team, I want that…This team we have, lean into each other. Learn. You got questions, ask. Man, I’m an open book. You want to talk hitting, you want to talk anything, ask me questions. Our pitching staff, man, lean into each other. Clayton Kershaw, I’m gonna pick your brain all day. Man, it’s gonna be fun.
“So sacrifice for your family at home, you’re sacrificing for your country, and you’re sacrificing for the brothers in the trenches with you every single day. And that’s one thing I want us to do, fellas, is just, I want to die on that field with you. You know, we’re down, we’re beat up a little bit, man, lean into each other. Man, we’re going to lay it all on the line. And if we do that, we’ll bring the gold home, I’m telling you.”
The sentiment was earnest. The delivery, according to a wave of critics on social media, fell flat.
Fans and media pile on the Yankees captain

The backlash was swift and loud. Barstool Sports posted that Judge’s speech would have fans ready to go for “a brisk walk.” The company’s founder, Dave Portnoy, called it the “worst speech ever.” Fans on X flooded the replies with jokes and criticism.
One fan wrote that Judge is “probably the greatest hitter of my lifetime” but called it “the worst speech I’ve ever heard.”
Another said they needed “caffeine pills to wake back up.”
Others tied the speech to a broader criticism of Judge’s tenure as Yankees captain, pointing to the team’s lack of a World Series title during his time wearing the ‘C’ on his jersey.
WFAN host Craig Carton took it further on his Tuesday show.
“Doesn’t it make more sense now when you saw Aaron Judge try to get Team USA all riled up with a speech for the ages,” Carton said. “As great a player as Aaron Judge has been and is and will be, he’s not a great leader of men.”
Carton suggested that the flat delivery explains what he sees as the Yankees’ recurring midseason slumps. It was a hot take, but it gained traction on social media throughout the day.
The comparisons to Shohei Ohtani’s fiery speech before the 2023 WBC gold medal game against Team USA did not help Judge’s case. Ohtani’s remarks before that final went viral for all the right reasons. Fans praised Ohtani for commanding the room and sparking immediate energy. Judge’s address, while sincere, did not land with the same force.
Context behind the speech matters
There is an important detail that got lost in the noise. Judge was not planning to give a speech at all. He told reporters that star pitchers Tarik Skubal and Paul Skenes reached out during the offseason and encouraged him to address the team when the group assembled Monday in Phoenix.
Judge has never been known as a fiery speaker. His leadership with the Yankees has always leaned toward actions, not words. He organizes teammates, sets routines and leads by example in the batting cage and on the field. That style has earned him deep respect inside the clubhouse, even if it does not produce goosebump-inducing locker room moments.
Judge lets his bat answer the critics
If the speech did not inspire anyone, Judge’s first at-bat in a Team USA uniform certainly did. In Tuesday’s exhibition against the Giants at Scottsdale Stadium, Judge came up in the first inning with Bobby Witt Jr. on base after a single and Bryce Harper standing on second after a double. On the first pitch he saw, Judge ripped a two-run single to center at 108.5 mph. Team USA never looked back.
The Americans pounded out 19 hits in a 15-1 rout. Bregman launched a solo homer, Roman Anthony hit a two-run shot and Harper added a two-run single. Judge finished 2-for-2 with two RBIs before being replaced by a pinch-runner in the fifth inning.
Team USA plays its final exhibition Wednesday against the Colorado Rockies. The real tournament begins Friday against Brazil in Houston. Judge, the two-time defending AL MVP and the first player to commit to Team USA last April, will be batting third.
The speech may not have lit up the room. But if the exhibition was any indication, the Yankees slugger does not need words to make his point. He has a bat for that.
