The New York Yankees have announced a major change to their iconic grey road jerseys for the 2024 season, opting to remove the white outlining from the chest lettering, back numbers, and decorative trim on the sleeve cuffs. This decision follows team captain Aaron Judge’s admiration for the throwback uniforms worn during the Field of Dreams game against the Chicago White Sox in August 2021 in Dyersville, Iowa.
As Ronald Blum of the Associated Press reported, Aaron Judge behind the Yankees’ decision to change on-road jersey conveyed his preference for the retro look to Yankees’ home clubhouse manager Rob Cucuzza. Cucuzza responded by offering to create a sample if the Yankees superstar was serious about the change, noting that the alteration would require approval from the team’s ownership.
The last time the Yankees modified their road uniforms was in 2016 when they increased the spacing between “New” and “York” on the front of the jerseys. Aaron Judge had initially suggested using the throwback style as an alternate uniform, appreciating its aesthetic and feel. He did not expect it to become the standard road jersey.
Following three years of internal discussions and consultations with Major League Baseball, the Yankees decided to implement Aaron Judge’s suggestion and eliminate the white piping for the 2024 season. While expressing his fondness for the old jerseys with white trim, the Yankees captain felt the new design offered a more classic and vintage look.
The Yankees faced challenges on the road last season, finishing with a 40-41 record. However, their impressive 26-11 away record this season suggests that Aaron Judge’s uniform request has positively influenced the team’s performance. The new design, which pays homage to the team’s storied past, appears to have revitalized the Yankees, instilling a renewed sense of pride and unity as they continue to excel on the road.
