In an interview with Jack Curry for Yankees Hot Stove, manager Aaron Boone gave the latest updates and talked about the status of both Frankie Montas and DJ LeMahieu.
Aaron Boone said that LeMahieu is in a “really good place” right now and that it’s “very likely” that he’ll be able to play for the Yankees on Opening Day in full health.
Because of a broken foot, LeMahieu missed the last month of the season and the whole postseason. This offseason, he didn’t have surgery and instead worked out at the team’s facility.
Aaron Boone recently saw a video of Lemahieu, who looked great and was “letting it rip” in the cages. He also said, “We think DJ is in a good place right now, in the middle of January.” He, however, told that the team will keep a close eye on the injury and that they may need to be careful with the veteran at times during the season.
If LeMahieu is healthy, he could be a huge help to the Yankees’ lineup.
Aaron Boone talks about Montas
Aaron Boone said that starting pitcher Montas was just given the green light by doctors to start working out. If everything goes well, he should soon be able to start his throwing program. Before Montas starts throwing, Boone wouldn’t give a date for when Montas could come back to the team. At first, it was thought that his sore shoulder would keep him out for at least the first month.
This will put Montas a little bit behind in the camp, but the manager said that the most important thing right now is to get Montas healthy before he speeds up.
Before putting him back in the rotation, the team wants to be more careful and make sure he’s in great shape. Aaron Boone said that Domingo German and Clarke Schmidt might be able to replace Montas in the rotation.
Aaron Boone said that when he does get back into the rotation, they will feel like they have “another front-line pitcher.”
