Due to expected storms in the New York City area, the opening game of the series between the Yankees and the Angels, originally scheduled for Tuesday, has been postponed and will be played as part of a doubleheader on Wednesday. Despite the weather-related cancellation, Yankees manager Aaron Boone met with the media to provide significant updates on several key players’ injuries.
Trevino nearing return
Catcher Jose Trevino is edging closer to a return from a quadriceps strain. Boone revealed that Trevino might play in a rehab game as early as Sunday. “If not Sunday, then Tuesday at the latest,” Boone stated. Trevino’s impending return will be a significant boost for the Yankees, who have missed his defensive prowess and leadership behind the plate.
Rizzo and Berti showing progress
First baseman Anthony Rizzo is making notable strides in his recovery from a right forearm fracture. According to Boone, Rizzo is “doing well” and has begun hitting in the batting cage. However, there is no definitive timeline for his return to the lineup. “He’s progressing nicely, but we’re taking it day by day,” Boone said.
Infielder Jon Berti, who has been sidelined with a calf strain, is also on the mend. Berti is “getting back to running at full speed,” but he hasn’t quite reached that level yet. Boone indicated that if Berti continues to progress without setbacks, he could head to Tampa to further his rehab work. “This week will be crucial for Jon. If all goes well, he’ll replicate this week’s activities in Tampa,” Boone noted.
Clarke Schmidt Throws Live BP
In other news, right-hander Clarke Schmidt threw a live batting practice session on Tuesday, with Anthony Rizzo among the hitters facing him. Schmidt, who has been working his way back from injury, reported feeling “great” after the session. “I felt really good out there. My arm is strong, and my pitches had good movement,” Schmidt told Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News. Schmidt is scheduled for another live BP session on Saturday, and Boone mentioned that the next step could be either another live BP or a rehab assignment.
Boone stresses patience
Boone emphasized the importance of patience with all players’ recoveries, especially as the Yankees navigate a challenging season. “We have to make sure these guys are fully ready before we bring them back. The last thing we want is a setback,” he said. The Yankees have been plagued by injuries this season, making the careful management of player health even more critical.
With the doubleheader set for Wednesday, Boone outlined the team’s approach, noting that pitching depth will be crucial. “We’ll need everyone to step up. Doubleheaders are tough, but we’re ready for the challenge,” Boone remarked. The Yankees are expected to announce their starters for both games soon.
Looking ahead
As the Yankees prepare for the doubleheader and the return of key players, fans are hopeful that the team’s fortunes will improve. The updates on Rizzo, Berti, and Trevino offer a glimmer of hope for a roster that has struggled with consistency and injuries. Boone’s cautious optimism reflects the team’s approach: focused on long-term health and success, even amid the immediate challenges.
The Yankees’ ability to stay competitive in the playoff race will hinge on the timely and healthy returns of these players. For now, all eyes are on the doubleheader against the Angels and the steady progress of Rizzo, Berti, and Trevino.

Boone is here and was always here because if Cashman. Cashman goes, Boone is good as gone too. Cashman wanted a puppet.
Hopefully Schmidt starts a rehab assignment by next Tuesday.
When Trevino comes back hopefully he just doesn’t get back his spot. Remember, now Wells is also the guy hitting behind Judge, and doing it well.
Berti, let me know when he’s actually started a rehab assignment.
With Rizzo, just take your time getting him ready.
