New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone expressed profound grief on Monday following the death of Rachel Minaya, wife of team executive Omar Minaya, who passed away on Saturday at age 55.

Rachel Minaya remembered in pre-game tribute led by Yankees at Yankee Stadium

Before their game against the Tampa Bay Rays at Yankee Stadium, which ended in a 9-1 victory, the team held a moment of silence in Rachel’s memory. She was found dead at the family’s home in Harrington Park, New Jersey.

“We’re all heartbroken,” Boone said, his voice breaking. “My heart goes out to O and his family. It’s very hard. I don’t want to get too far into it, just because I haven’t even talked to O about it yet.”

Boone, known for his close-knit relationship with his players and staff, displayed rare vulnerability as he spoke about the tragic news. His comments highlighted the deep personal bonds within the baseball community. Omar Minaya, a former Mets general manager, joined the Yankees as a special adviser to GM Brian Cashman in 2023.

Prior to the national anthem on Monday, public address announcer Paul Olden requested a moment of silence while Rachel’s picture was shown on the scoreboard. Boone and his team bowed their heads in tribute.

The Yankees released a statement saying, “The Yankees are devastated to learn of the passing of Rachel Minaya, the wife of Yankees Baseball Operations Senior Advisor Omar Minaya. To those closest to her, she was a loving and compassionate mother and wife, and a huge supporter of her family and loved ones.”

Boone’s leadership during this somber time underscored his respect within the organization. He has often emphasized the importance of family, both personal and the extended family formed within the team. This incident reaffirmed that philosophy as Boone and the Yankees rallied around the Minaya family.

“In a very short time, Omar has become a beloved member of the Yankees organization,” the statement continued. “Over the course of his distinguished career, he has freely given to others with kindness and friendship. In this unthinkable time, we offer Omar, his sons Justin and Teddy, and their family and friends our profound condolences. His family is an extension of the baseball family, and this loss is deeply felt among all of us.”

Boone’s ability to articulate the team’s shared grief while focusing on the game showcased his leadership. The Yankees played a strong game, perhaps driven by the desire to honor Rachel’s memory and support Omar Minaya.

The Harrington Park Police Department was called to the Minaya residence on Saturday afternoon after a welfare check was requested by a neighbor and family friend, according to police chief Robert Murphy. Officers found Rachel unconscious and attempted resuscitation before she was transported to Hackensack Meridian Health Pascack Valley Medical Center in Westwood, where she was pronounced dead.

Bergen County prosecutor Mark Musella announced an investigation into Rachel’s death. “The circumstances involved do not appear suspicious; however, a ruling on the cause and manner of death is pending,” Musella’s office said in a press release. “Additional details are not available for release while this investigation continues.”

When asked about the possibility of suicide, Murphy responded, “Nothing has been ruled out yet. That’s where we’re at. It’s up in the air.”
