Nestor Cortes is betting on his health for a chance at World Series glory, while Jon Berti finds himself sidelined in a surprising roster move by the Yankees.

The Yankees made a tough call on their World Series roster, leaving out Jon Berti due to a hip flexor injury he sustained in Game 4 of the ALCS against Cleveland. Known for his defensive versatility and speed, Berti had been a valuable piece for the Yankees throughout the postseason, covering infield positions and adding agility on the basepaths. However, as manager Aaron Boone revealed, the injury proved more limiting than initially hoped, and Berti wasn’t able to return in time for the series opener against the Dodgers.

“He hurt himself in Game 4 when he scored that run,” Boone explained, noting the critical impact Berti’s speed had in that game. “He wasn’t going to be available for Game 5, and while we were hoping he’d recover for the World Series, time just ran out.” Berti’s absence is a blow to the Yankees’ defensive depth and their ability to deploy a seasoned base-stealing threat, making the lineup a bit less aggressive on the basepaths.

In his postseason appearances, Berti went 2-for-11 with a walk, but his true value went beyond numbers. His speed and defensive reliability, especially in covering positions like first base to spell Anthony Rizzo, provided the Yankees flexibility in late-game situations. Without him, Boone will likely rely on switch-hitter Oswaldo Cabrera to handle backup infield duties. Additionally, the Yankees will look to other players, including Jasson Dominguez and Trent Grisham, to pinch-run if the need arises.

This injury situation also opened up a roster spot for Nestor Cortes, who rejoined the Yankees after recovering from a left flexor strain. The southpaw hasn’t pitched since September 18, but he completed a simulated game earlier this week, signaling readiness for limited bullpen duty. “We know the risks, but if I end up with a ring and need time off, that’s a price I’d pay,” Cortes remarked, emphasizing his commitment to the Yankees’ World Series aspirations.

As the Yankees prepare to face the Dodgers, the lineup and pitching staff are slightly reshuffled, with 13 position players and 13 pitchers. The roster adjustments reflect a calculated move, balancing the loss of Berti’s defense and speed with the addition of Cortes’ left-handed pitching experience for critical matchups. Boone and the Yankees enter the series confident in their adaptability, even as they feel the impact of Berti’s absence.

Berti’s injury is a setback, but the Yankees are focused on seizing every advantage in their pursuit of a World Series title.
