The Yankees-Guardians game broadcast unfolded seamlessly. Nate Rosenhaus, sporting his distinctive hairstyle, returned to the Yankees’ uniform on Saturday in place of the Guardians’ batboy. This marked the first game of a doubleheader, with the Yankees clinching a tight 3-2 victory.
Last year, Yankees broadcaster Michael Kay questioned on Rosenhaus’s appearance. Rosenhaus had a mustache and long hair flowing past his shoulders, a style that did not adhere to the Yankees’ longstanding “Neatness Counts” policy established in 1976.
During Saturday’s broadcast, John Flaherty, the interim play-by-play announcer for the YES Network, seemed to remain silent when the camera zoomed in on Rosenhaus before the game. It’s possible Flaherty didn’t recognize Rosenhaus or maybe he was trying to prevent a repeat of the commentary incident that caused trouble for Kay the year before.
The YES Network posted a video on Instagram celebrating Rosenhaus’s comeback with the caption “LOOK who has RETURNED!”
The viral story of the Yankees batboy in Cleveland
It’s interesting to recall that a year ago, Yankees broadcaster Michael Kay made a comment about Rosenhaus’s appearance during a game. Kay reportedly remarked, “It’s unusual to see someone in a Yankee uniform with such long hair. If the players can’t have it, I don’t know why the bat boy should. There are rules that need to be followed. He’s breaking two of them – facial hair and long hair.”
However, Kay later mentioned that he and Rosenhaus found the resulting buzz quite amusing.
In response to public reaction, reports indicated that Rosenhaus wore his hair tucked under his helmet during the next game.
Michael Kay reportedly voiced his frustration with the situation on his ESPN radio show, stating, “This whole thing is truly unfortunate. It’s a challenging time in our world, for humanity in general. People are just being unkind. To suggest I was attacking someone is completely off base. There was no attack!”
The report also noted that Rosenhaus’s hair returned to its usual flowing style on Saturday, even covering the “s” on the “Yankees” logo on his hoodie.
