Juan Soto earns praise from former Yankee Joe Torre: ‘Tough to beat’

Former New York Yankees manager Joe Torre, a four-time World Series champion, is keeping a keen eye on Juan Soto, the Yankees’ right field superstar, as he approaches free agency. Torre, who knows the pressures of New York, believes Soto is capable of handling the city’s intense expectations.

“New York’s not easy,” Torre commented during his appearance at a Somerset Patriots minor-league game on Tuesday night. “Expectations are high. Playing the Mets in 2000 in the World Series, they may have had more talented personnel, but we were the Yankees. You keep looking over your shoulder and there’s George Steinbrenner. So, yeah, there’s a lot of pressure. But if you win there, there’s nothing like it.”

As Soto, a free agent this offseason, continues to demonstrate his prowess, Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner faces the pressure of re-signing him. Soto’s agent, Scott Boras, is likely to seek a contract upwards of $550 million, possibly even $600 million. The Yankees will have to decide if they are willing to meet these demands, especially if other teams like the Mets or Dodgers enter the bidding war.

Wherever Soto lands, Torre believes he will face immense pressure to justify his hefty contract. “If a guy doesn’t perform, sure there are going to be some media people that are going to allude to the fact that you’re not earning how much you’re making,” Torre said. “But that just goes with the fact that you’re making a lot of money.”

Soto has certainly proven his worth, boasting a .308 average and 1.020 OPS with 25 home runs and 71 RBIs this season, adding to his already impressive career statistics.

Despite the Yankees’ struggles since mid-June, Torre remains optimistic about their World Series prospects. He commends their pitching and believes their lineup, featuring Aaron Judge and Soto, is formidable. Torre anticipates that General Manager Brian Cashman will make necessary moves before the trade deadline to strengthen the roster.

“I think if you go one by one with their pitchers, they’re all capable of getting them to the promised land,” Torre said. “It’s just a matter of they’ve stumbled around a little bit over the last few weeks. But knowing Cashman, he’ll make a deal if he thinks he needs to shore up the pitching staff.

“I think offensively they’re tough to beat (with Judge and Soto). It’s really amazing. Soto, of course, we all noticed him when he came up with Washington and they won the World Series. He’s 25 years old, such a breath of fresh air with his personality. With the ability he has, you always hold your breath because you’re not sure coming to New York because it’s a little different animal. There are some players that have had trouble performing, but obviously he hasn’t had that problem and I’m happy for the Yankees.”

As Soto navigates his free agency, Torre’s insights offer a valuable perspective on the pressures and potential rewards of playing in New York. The Yankees’ offseason decisions will be crucial in determining whether Soto remains a cornerstone of their future.
