Mariano Rivera has long been an illustrious figure in the history of the New York Yankees. However, this year his political positions have become particularly noteworthy. According to Fox News, the former Yankees player has chosen a side and will be a vocal supporter.

In a recent interview on WABC Radio’s “Sid & Friends,” Mariano Rivera expressed his belief that former President Donald Trump could be successful if elected president again in 2024. Rivera, who spent his entire 19-year MLB career with the Yankees, endorsed Trump, saying “President Trump, he’s my friend. I can’t deny that. I will tell that to anyone. Before he was the president, he was my friend. Because of that, I’m going to vote for him.”

Trump and Mariano Rivera have a long-standing relationship, with the former president awarding Rivera the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2019. At the ceremony, Trump praised Rivera as “maybe the greatest pitcher of all time” and highlighted his humility and Christian faith.

Mariano Rivera’s endorsement of his friend Trump comes as the former president is expected to run again in 2024, potentially facing off against the incumbent President Joe Biden. As a legendary Yankees closer who won 5 World Series championships, Rivera’s political support carries significant weight.

The outcome of the 2024 election will have major implications not just for the United States, but globally. With the Republican and Democratic parties offering starkly different visions, the choice of the next occupant of the Oval Office will shape policy on issues ranging from the economy to foreign affairs. As a prominent sports figure who has crossed party lines to back Trump, Mariano Rivera’s voice will likely be closely watched in the lead-up to Election Day.

Raised in the fishing village of Puerto Caimito, Panama, Mariano Rivera’s path to becoming a Yankees legend was anything but ordinary. Signed by the Yankees as an international amateur free agent in 1990, Rivera quickly made a name for himself in the minor leagues, dominating with his electric stuff.

After a rocky MLB debut in 1995, Rivera emerged as a dominant force out of the Yankees’ bullpen, establishing himself as the premier setup man in baseball. When closer John Wetteland departed after the 1996 season, Rivera seamlessly slid into the ninth inning role, saving 43 games that year and helping the Yankees end their World Series drought.

Mariano Rivera’s signature cutter, which he developed by accident in 1997, made him virtually unhittable. Over the next two decades, he anchored the Yankees’ bullpen, recording a then-record 652 career saves and cementing his legacy as the greatest relief pitcher of all time.

Through it all, Rivera maintained a humble, team-first attitude, becoming a beloved figure in the Bronx. His final game at Yankee Stadium in 2013 was a poignant goodbye, with Derek Jeter and Andy Pettitte removing him from the mound one last time. Rivera’s induction into the Hall of Fame in 2019 as the first unanimous selection was the ultimate capstone to his unparalleled Yankees career.

Mariano Rivera’s endorsement of Trump is particularly noteworthy given his legendary status as one of the greatest players in Yankees history. Over 19 seasons from 1995 to 2013, he established himself as the most dominant closer in MLB, recording 652 saves – the most in league history. Rivera was the anchor of Yankees teams that won 5 World Series championships, cementing his legacy as a clutch performer on the biggest stage.

Beyond his on-field accomplishments, Mariano Rivera has also been widely respected for his character and faith. Trump praised Rivera’s “deep Christian faith” when presenting him the Presidential Medal of Freedom, highlighting his humility in the face of wealth and fame. This reputation as a man of strong moral principles has likely bolstered Rivera’s political influence, as voters seek out public figures they view as authentic and principled.

The Yankees organization has generally avoided wading into partisan politics, preferring to remain neutral. However, Rivera’s vocal support for Trump may put the team in an awkward position, as they navigate the divisive political landscape. Some Yankees fans may applaud Mariano Rivera for standing by his friend, while others may be displeased to see a franchise icon aligning himself with a controversial political figure. Nonetheless, Rivera’s stature within the Yankees legacy ensures his voice will carry significant weight, regardless of how the team itself chooses to navigate these turbulent waters.

For now, the New York Yankees are poised to claim another series victory, having already shattered numerous Major League Baseball records in the opening two weeks of the 2024 regular season.
