In his career, Gerrit Cole has achieved the distinction by delivering his best in challenging situations. However, during an interview after securing the American League Cy Young award, the Yankees ace took an eight-second pause after a question forced out his emotional side.

Following the announcement of his first Cy Young win, Gerrit Cole appeared on a live broadcast by MLB Network. While chatting about his game, Pedro Martinez posed a slightly different question. He asked the Yankees ace about who he would like to celebrate the occasion.

“I have to ask you and it’s a little bit of a different question,” Martinez asked Gerrit Cole. “If you have to name someone who you want to have with you receiving the trophy because of how much he means to you or she means to you or that person who you want to really think of when you receive the trophy, who would that be?”

This brought out the emotional side of the Yankees ace. Gerrit Cole, instead of answering, looked at his wife Amy, who was on his side during the interview. It took the Cy Young winner approximately eight seconds to unequivocally choose her. Then he responded:

“I think it would probably be … it would be tough not to say Amy right next to me.”

"I take a lot of pride in going out there and representing the @Yankees organization… to be joining [other Yankees Cy Young winners] is part of a greater dream that I had as a kid."

The answer highlighted Gerrit Cole’s love for Amy. With a broad grin on his face, the ace pitcher admitted that it would likely be challenging not to mention Amy. This followed him giving her an affectionate nudge and a heartfelt smile.

With a wide smile, the 33-year-old Cole concluded his tribute to his wife, and they shared a warm embrace, enjoying a lighthearted moment. The show’s host, Greg Amsinger, also added some humor to the situation. He cheered, expressing satisfaction and excitement, mentioning that everyone had hoped for that particular outcome and was rooting for it.

Gerrit Cole’s love for wife Amy

The Yankees rotation leader met Amy during their time at UCLA, where she played on the Bruins’ softball team. They tied the knot in 2016 and have two sons, Caden (3) and Everett (born in January 2023).

According to Gerrit Cole, she had been there since he was a young student and had supported him in various aspects and life journeys. He acknowledged her role in moving to New York, setting up the home with the kids during the pandemic, and being a rock for the family during the transition to a new place.

Gerrit Cole emphasized Amy’s significant role behind the scenes and expressed that she’s the one he would like sitting next to him when he receives the award.
