The New York Yankees fell short of clinching the AL East title for the second consecutive night, losing to the Baltimore Orioles 9-7 at Yankee Stadium on Wednesday. The defeat was marred by defensive errors and missed chances, leaving the Yankees’ magic number to secure the division at just one.

While the final score indicated a close contest, the game was largely decided prior to a late rally by the Yankees. They scored four runs in the ninth inning, highlighted by an RBI single from Juan Soto and a three-run homer from Aaron Judge, but it wasn’t enough to erase an earlier deficit.

Rookie Jasson Dominguez was at the heart of the Yankees’ defensive issues, misplaying a catchable fly ball in left field during a bases-loaded situation in the first inning, which allowed two runs to score. Domínguez took responsibility for the error, admitting he lost track of the ball and emphasizing that such plays must be made consistently.

Dominguez’s disaster dooms Yankees early

The tone of the game shifted early due to a defensive misstep by rookie Jasson Dominguez in left field. Starting pitcher Marcus Stroman had already allowed three hits in his first eight pitches when Colton Cowser, a candidate for AL Rookie of the Year alongside Yankees catcher Austin Wells, sent a high fly ball toward the left field corner.

Dominguez misjudged the ball, overrunning it before attempting an awkward backward reach. The ball fell and bounced off the wall toward the infield. By the time he retrieved it and threw to shortstop Anthony Volpe, two runs had already crossed the plate. Wells managed to prevent further damage by throwing out Anthony Santander at third base.

According to MLB’s Statcast, the fly ball had a 95 percent chance of being caught, highlighting the routine nature of the play. Manager Aaron Boone recognized the difficulty of the catch but emphasized that such plays need to be made at this level.

Aaron Judge expressed confidence in Dominguez’s ability to learn from the mistake, noting the rookie’s awareness of his error. This supportive stance from the team’s star player reflects the Yankees’ approach to developing young talent while maintaining team morale during critical moments of the season.

“He knows he should have made that play, but he’ll learn from it and be better,” the Yankees captain said.

Dominguez’s recent defensive missteps have raised concerns for the Yankees, marking his third error in about a week after lapses in both center and left field during the Seattle series.

Others join Yankees’ error party too

Other defensive miscues included a mishandled potential double play by third baseman Jazz Chisholm and an errant throw to first by Anthony Volpe. These blunders left manager Aaron Boone visibly concerned about the team’s performance, especially after a successful West Coast road trip.

Boone described the team’s effort as “sloppy” and acknowledged that their poor start made it challenging to recover. Nonetheless, he remained optimistic, stating that a win on Thursday would secure the division title and mitigate recent performance concerns.

“Just kind of try to take it all in,” he said. “What gives you the best chance to win on a given night? Try and obviously give a good look to Jasson here down the stretch because we know he’s capable out there. I feel like he’s been giving some good at-bats of late. But we’ll continue to pay attention to all of it.”

Reflecting on the season, Boone highlighted the team’s resilience and ability to push through adversity. He noted that the current challenges align with the team’s experiences throughout the year and expressed confidence in their capacity to overcome these obstacles.

Aaron Judge downplayed the significance of being on the verge of clinching the division title, stating that every game at this stage is tough. He acknowledged the strength of their opponents, who have remained competitive throughout the season, and dismissed the idea that the pressure of clinching makes the game more challenging.

These ongoing issues may bolster Alex Verdugo’s claim as the starting left fielder for the playoffs, given his more reliable defensive performance. The Yankees may also prioritize maximizing their offensive output, particularly from key hitters like Aaron Judge, Juan Soto, Giancarlo Stanton, and Austin Wells.

When asked about his criteria for selecting a left fielder in critical games, manager Aaron Boone emphasized a comprehensive strategy, stating that he would weigh all factors that enhance the team’s chances of winning each night. Boone acknowledged the importance of providing Domínguez opportunities in the season’s final stretch, recognizing the rookie’s potential and recent offensive improvements.

With just four games remaining in the regular season, the Yankees need only one victory to clinch the division title and ease some of the pressure. However, as of Wednesday night, the team’s celebration remains on hold, with champagne still unopened.
