The Yankees are hosting the Cubs for a three-game series starting Friday. Apart from Carlos Rodon, who is making his debut, fans are eager to see the performance of ex-NL MVP Cody Bellinger. The Yankees are reportedly pursuing the outfielder as a possible trade target. When asked about it, the former MVP told that he was aware of the possible trade though he liked to be in Chicago for the time being.

The star player from the Chicago Cubs, who will be visiting the Bronx for a three-game series against the Yankees this weekend, realizes that this could be an important opportunity for him. On Thursday, Bellinger had an exceptional performance, going 4-for-4 in the game. He hit a home run, a double, and two singles, contributing to four of the Cubs’ five runs in a close 6-5 loss to the Brewers. This outstanding performance also extended his hitting streak to 12 games, which equals his personal best.

Bellinger conveyed his awareness of the potential outcomes and his satisfaction with his current team when asked about a move to the Yankees. He expressed his dedication to contributing to the team’s success and his desire for the team to maintain unity and achieve a series of victories. Bellinger emphasized the team’s strength, affirming their collective excellence.

“I know what’s possible,” he said. “But I like being here. Focusing on helping this team win while I am here. Hopefully, we can get on a little roll and stay together. We have a really good group here.”

Interestingly, with the Cubs facing challenges and not making much progress before the trade deadline on August 1st, there is speculation about Bellinger’s future. As a talented left-handed hitting outfielder, he could bring a much-needed boost to a struggling lineup like the Yankees. Bellinger will become a free agent after the current season, which adds to the possibility of him being available for trade if the Cubs don’t improve their position.

Yankees remain the top destination for Bellinger

According to MLB Trade Rumors, there are questions about whether Bellinger will stay with the team. Following his release from the Dodgers, Bellinger signed a $17 million, one-year contract with the Cubs. Initially, he performed well by hitting .271/.343/.493 with good defense in center field until mid-May. Although his exit velocities were not at their peak, he significantly reduced his strikeout rate and achieved an above-average batting performance.

Unfortunately, a left knee contusion forced Bellinger to miss nearly a month of action after a strong start. Since his return, he has maintained a batting average of.317 over 62 plate appearances, but his walk count has been low, with only four walks. Additionally, he hasn’t hit any home runs in the past 17 games. The Cubs initially played him at first base upon his return but later moved him back to center field last week.

While Bellinger hasn’t reached the level of his Most Valuable Player (MVP) performance, he is currently having his strongest season since 2020. It is uncommon to come across center fielders who excel defensively and also possess offensive potential. The Yankees need such a player.

Bellinger has the ability to make an impact in both aspects of the game, even though his current profile leans more toward contact-hitting than being an all-around dominant batter.

The ex-NL MVP remarked on the importance of the series occurring at Yankee Stadium, indicating that it holds significant value in New York. He also suggested that its significance may go beyond the scope of the three games, hinting at the possibility of broader implications or a greater impact.

I wouldn’t include Pereira in a deal for Bellinger unless his representatives and he agree on a deal to stay a Yankee. I’m tired of this team giving up assets for trade deadline “rental” players.
