Andrew Giuliani is seeking to prevent his father Rudy Giuliani’s Yankees World Series rings from being used to settle a $148 million defamation judgment against the former New York City mayor, according to the NY Post.
The legal dispute stems from a case involving Georgia poll workers Ruby Freeman and Shaye Moss, who successfully sued Rudy Giuliani in 2023 for defaming them in the aftermath of the 2020 U.S. presidential election.
The gifted rings
Andrew Giuliani asserts that the rings, commemorating the Yankees’ 1996, 1998, 1999, and 2000 championships, were given to him by his father in 2018, and thus, should be exempt from the collection efforts. According to court filings, Andrew’s lawyers argued that forcing him to turn over the rings would “permanently deprive” him of his ownership of the items. Andrew received the rings during a family celebration, with Rudy Giuliani reportedly telling him, “I want to give them to you now.”
Pursuit of Giuliani’s assets
Freeman and Moss are seeking the rings, among other assets, as part of their effort to collect the $148 million judgment. They won the defamation lawsuit after accusing Rudy Giuliani of falsely claiming they attempted to interfere in the 2020 election. In addition to the rings, Freeman and Moss are also targeting several other high-value assets, including luxury watches, properties, and a Mercedes-Benz.
The poll workers recently succeeded in getting a judge to order Rudy Giuliani to remove his Manhattan condo from the market after he reduced its price by nearly $1 million. The plaintiffs argued that the price cut would reduce the overall value of his assets.
Manhattan federal Judge Lewis Liman granted Andrew Giuliani permission to intervene in the case on Wednesday, allowing him to assert his claim to the rings. Be that as it may, Andrew emphasized the sentimental value of the rings, explaining that they symbolize a deep connection he shared with his father over their mutual love for the Yankees.
The ongoing legal battle underscores the mounting financial challenges facing Rudy Giuliani, as Freeman and Moss continue to pursue his most valuable possessions. According to the court documents, they remain focused on obtaining the rings and other assets to ensure full payment of the $148 million defamation judgment.
