After Japan, another country that the New York Yankees may consider expanding their brand into is France. As Major League Baseball seeks to establish a presence in Europe, it aims to connect with locals and grow its fan base.
According to Seattle Times, the Major League Baseball (MLB) sees France – the home country of NBA prospect Victor Wembanyama, – as a promising market for expansion. MLB’s chief operations and strategy officer, Chris Marinak, highlights the fashion element of baseball, which aligns with France’s renowned fashion industry. France’s strong presence of jerseys and hats, coupled with its fashion-conscious culture, presents an opportunity for MLB to capitalize on the popularity of merchandise sales.
France has emerged as one of MLB’s hottest markets in Europe, with a significant increase in online merchandise sales, particularly for caps, up by 152% this year. The New York Yankees, known for their iconic brand, are the top sellers in the French market.
The potential for growth in France
Whether ironic or not, French player Victor Wembanyama made an appearance prior to the game against the Seattle Mariners. It remains to be seen if this is a deliberate marketing move by the Yankees to enhance their influence in Europe, or simply a fortunate coincidence of timing.
To further leverage the fashion element and gain media exposure, MLB plans to play games in Paris during the 2025 season. While the details are not yet finalized, the New York Yankees have expressed interest in headlining the event following their successful participation in MLB’s European debut in London in 2019. The popularity of Yankees merchandise sales in France and across Europe further supports the marketing potential of expanding into the French market.
In addition to France, Brazil also presents an intriguing opportunity for MLB. With its vibrant and passionate sports culture, Brazil has shown a growing interest in baseball caps. MLB aims to tap into this enthusiasm and expand its reach in South America. While specific plans and initiatives are yet to be announced, the potential for growth in Brazil is significant, as the country embraces various sports and offers a rich sports market.
The road ahead for MLB’s global expansion
MLB’s expansion efforts extend beyond France. The league’s merchandise sales have grown substantially worldwide, with the Europe-Middle East-Africa region experiencing a 37% increase. London remains a crucial anchor for MLB in Europe, with plans to establish a presence in Paris.
Major League Baseball is determined to broaden its global reach and is actively pursuing a dominant position in Europe by leveraging France’s fashion industry. The league is relentless in its objective to captivate fans and expand its fan base by delivering exciting avenues for fans to engage with the game of baseball.
