Darryl Strawberry, a beloved former New York Yankees player and three-time World Series champion, is recovering after experiencing a heart attack on Monday night. The two-time World Series winner shared the news with his followers on his Instagram account, maintaining an optimistic outlook despite the frightening ordeal.

In his post, Darryl Strawberry expressed his gratitude, attributing his survival to God’s intervention. He conveyed his relief and happiness that the situation had a positive outcome. Recognizing the prompt response of the medical team, Darryl Strawberry praised the healthcare professionals at St. Joseph West in Lake St. Louis, specifically acknowledging the team that performed the stent procedure, which successfully restored his heart function. As he concluded his message, Darryl Strawberry requested ongoing prayers and support for his complete recovery.

Get well soon Darryl Strawberry

Yankees fans are sending their best wishes to Darryl Strawberry, a beloved figure who played a key role in the team’s three World Series championships from 1996 to 1998. Strawberry, who is a regular participant in the Yankees’ Old Timers’ Day celebrations, recently shared on his Instagram account that he had suffered a heart attack on Monday night.

Although Darryl Strawberry’s later years with the Yankees as an outfielder and designated hitter were hampered by injuries, his contributions to the team’s championship runs cannot be overstated. However, his baseball legacy is most closely associated with the New York Mets, the team that drafted him as the number one overall pick in the 1980 MLB draft.

Darryl Strawberry burst onto the scene in 1983, winning the National League Rookie of the Year Award. His eight-year tenure with the Mets was nothing short of remarkable, as he set the franchise record for home runs with 252 and earned eight All-Star selections.

Despite encountering various challenges throughout his life and career, Darryl Strawberry has consistently displayed incredible resilience. As he begins the arduous journey to recovery, his faith and positive outlook remain unwavering. Fans and well-wishers are hopeful for a smooth and complete recovery for this baseball legend.

Despite his tenure with the Yankees being ultimately shortened by injuries, Darryl Strawberry undoubtedly made a significant impact on the Bronx Bombers. He joined the team on July 4th, 1996, and quickly demonstrated glimpses of his former brilliance. Although playing in a part-time capacity, he launched 11 home runs and contributed to the Yankees’ 1996 World Series triumph. This championship victory served as a reunion for Strawberry, as he reconnected with former Mets teammates Dwight Gooden and David Cone. A standout moment from his 1996 season occurred on August 6th when he recorded the second three-homer game of his career against the Chicago White Sox.

Darryl Strawberry’s dominance continued in the 1996 American League Championship Series against the Baltimore Orioles. He played a crucial role in the series, blasting three home runs and driving in five runs while posting an impressive .417 batting average over the course of four games. Unfortunately, the 1997 season saw Strawberry’s playing time severely limited by injuries. These setbacks prevented him from hitting any home runs that year, and he only managed to appear in 11 games, recording just two RBIs.

Despite being hampered by injuries in his later years with the Yankees, Darryl Strawberry proved to be a valuable contributor to the team. In 1998, he rebounded with a strong performance, belting 24 home runs and helping the Yankees secure another World Series championship. This marked the first time since 1991 that Strawberry had played in 100 or more games in a season.

However, Darryl Strawberry had been quietly battling undisclosed abdominal pain for nearly two months, which affected his playing time towards the end of the season. The true shock came during the American League Division Series when he was diagnosed with colon cancer. As a result, rookie Ricky Ledée replaced him on the roster.

Displaying incredible resilience, Darryl Strawberry returned to the team in 1999 after undergoing cancer treatment. Although his playing time remained limited, he still managed to hit 3 home runs, including a crucial 3-run shot against the Texas Rangers in the ALDS that propelled the Yankees to the American League Championship Series.

Strawberry’s legacy transcends his power-hitting prowess. He is one of only five players in major league history to achieve the remarkable feat of hitting two pinch-hit grand slams in a single season. Moreover, he shares a unique distinction with former teammate Ricky Ledee and Jose Vizcaíno: having played for all four New York-based MLB teams – the Mets, Yankees, Dodgers, and Giants.

Darryl Strawberry remains a beloved figure among Yankees fans and is a regular participant in the team’s Old Timers’ Day festivities. His most recent appearance at the event was in 2023.
