The New York Yankees have shifted focus with recent roster moves, particularly after securing ace Gerrit Cole, who initially opted out of his $324 million contract. With an eye toward 2025, general manager Brian Cashman has shown renewed interest in bolstering the starting rotation, with Atlanta Braves standout Max Fried emerging as a key potential acquisition by the Yankees.
Since 2019, Fried has been a reliable force for Atlanta, compiling a 3.06 ERA across 824 2/3 innings with 71 wins, 31 losses, 797 strikeouts, and a 1.14 WHIP. His resume is stacked with accolades, including two All-Star selections, three Gold Glove awards, and a World Series title, exactly what the Yankees are scouting for.
In 2024, Fried posted solid numbers in his contract year, despite a modest 11-10 record. He maintained a competitive 3.25 ERA and 1.16 WHIP, with 166 strikeouts over 174 1/3 innings—a strong rebound after a limited 2023 season of just 77 2/3 innings pitched. This fills the Yankees’ rotation boost parameters.
Yankees interested in rotation makeover
According to the New York Post, the Yankees have begun early talks with several elite pitchers in the free-agent market. Alongside Fried, they’ve shown interest in Corbin Burnes and Blake Snell. However, questions loom over whether the Yankees can pursue both an ace and trade target Juan Soto. They’re also reportedly eyeing Sean Manaea, who is expected to decline a $21.05 million qualifying offer from the Mets.
As it stands, New York’s 2025 rotation includes Cole, Carlos Rodon, Marcus Stroman, Clarke Schmidt, Luis Gil, and Nestor Cortes. While well-stocked, Cashman might consider trades to open roster space and address other team needs.
Fried’s projected market value is significant, with MLB Trade Rumors estimating he could land a six-year deal worth $156 million in free agency.
