The New York Yankees have reinstated right-handed pitcher Nick Burdi from his rehab assignment and removed him from the 60-day injured list, the team announced Thursday. Despite his readiness to return, Burdi has been optioned to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre for the time being.

Burdi, 31, had a brief but effective stint with the Yankees this season, making 12 appearances and posting a 1.86 ERA with a 1.45 WHIP over 9.2 innings. His season has been marred by injury, as he was first placed on the injured list in April due to right hip inflammation. After a brief return in May, he was sidelined again with the same issue, leading to his transfer to the 60-day IL in June.

To accommodate Burdi’s return, the Yankees transferred RHP Cody Poteet to the 60-day IL. Poteet, who had been called up from Triple-A in June, made four starts for the Yankees, compiling a 3-0 record with a 2.14 ERA and striking out 13 batters over 21 innings. He was placed on the injured list on June 18 with a right triceps strain.

As the Yankees navigate the second half of the season, the decision to option Burdi to Triple-A indicates a cautious approach to managing his health and ensuring he can contribute effectively when needed. Meanwhile, Poteet’s transfer to the 60-day IL underscores the ongoing challenges the team faces with injuries to key players.

The Yankees’ bullpen, which has been dealing with a slew of injuries, could benefit from Burdi’s eventual return to the majors if he can maintain his early-season form. For now, Burdi will look to regain his rhythm in Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, while the Yankees continue to monitor their pitching staff’s health and performance closely.

  1. I don’t disagree with this move. I do want Burdi and Hamilton back ASAP, but I have to be patient. Yankees need both plus having DeLos Santos and Leiter on board. “Maybe” Boone can manage a little better with a bullpen by committee and not just Holmes all the time. I doubt Boone can manage that process. We should call Lou Pinella out of retirement to show Boone how it’s done. Heck, if the Rangers can convince Botchy out of retirement, why not Pinella as a bench coach? Pinella did it with the Nasty Boys!
