Oswaldo Cabrera, a utility player for the Yankees, was brought up from Triple-A just before Saturday’s game. He turned it into a strong comeback by hitting a home run in his only at-bat, contributing to the team’s 6-3 victory over the Dodgers.
Although Greg Allen was listed on Saturday’s lineup card, the Yankees placed him on the Injured List, making way for a member of the taxi squad just before the game.
Instead of recalling Franchy Cordero, who has already played this season and provides limited contributions, the Yankees made the decision to bring back Oswaldo Cabrera, who currently has a locker in LA. Oswaldo Cabrera started the day with a cross-country flight from Newark to rejoin the team’s roster as a replacement for the injured Greg Allen.
The return of Oswaldo Cabrera
Oswaldo Cabrera received the call-up before the game after spending a short period of time with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. He entered the game as a pinch hitter in the ninth inning and added to the Yankees’ victory with a solo home run that traveled 404 feet.
This was a significant hit for Oswaldo Cabrera, as he had been struggling at the plate, going 4-for-36 before being sent down to the minors on Thursday. With Harrison Bader and Greg Allen both on the injured list, Oswaldo Cabrera may have the opportunity to play in center field, although Isiah Kiner-Falefa got the start in that position on Saturday.
Oswaldo Cabrera departed from Newark Airport at 8:30 a.m. ET on Saturday morning to make his return to the Yankees. This decision came after the team placed Greg Allen on the 10-day injured list due to a right hip flexor strain. Just the day before, Oswaldo Cabrera found himself in Lehigh Valley with Triple-A Scranton after being demoted because of his underwhelming performance.
At 1:30 a.m. ET, the Yankees contacted Oswaldo Cabrera and informed him that he would be rejoining the team in Los Angeles. Despite the early hour, the utility player quickly got up and began packing for his cross-country flight. Initially, the Yankees stated that he would be part of the taxi squad while they assessed the seriousness of Allen’s injury. However, Oswaldo Cabrera didn’t mind the uncertainty. He was thrilled to be back with the team.
Oswaldo Cabrera wants MLB slot
“Nobody wants to be back in Triple A, in the minors,” he said. “It was not easy, but at the same time, I know I wasn’t helping (what) we wanted for the team. For that reason, I said, ‘OK, I want to be down there to try and find myself again and come back stronger.’”
Oswaldo Cabrera acknowledged that returning to Triple-A was not an ideal situation, stating that nobody wants to be in the minors. He recognized that his performance was not meeting the team’s expectations and believed that stepping down to Triple-A was necessary to find himself again and improve. Oswaldo Cabrera expressed his determination to come back stronger after his time in the minor leagues.
After hitting a solo home run in the ninth inning, Oswaldo Cabrera contributed to the Yankees’ 6-3 lead. Reflecting on his recent experiences, he emphasized the importance of enjoying the game while playing. He admitted to feeling the pressure of striving for desired outcomes that were eluding him, causing frustration. During his plane journey to Triple-A, Oswaldo Cabrera made a personal resolution to rediscover his love for the sport. He expressed optimism that his home run marked the beginning of his journey toward becoming the player he believes he can be.
“It’s not easy when you don’t have the successful moments that you want,” Cabrera said. “It’s not easy to have fun, but at the same time, I tried. I was enjoying each moment and being grateful all of the time that I was on the field because not too many people are in this spot I am right now.”
He acknowledged that maintaining a sense of enjoyment can be difficult under such circumstances. Despite the difficulties, he made a conscious effort to find joy in each moment and express gratitude for the opportunity to be on the field. Oswaldo Cabrera recognized the privilege of being in his current position, understanding that it is a unique and limited opportunity.
