The New York Yankees are reportedly considering including their top prospect, Spencer Jones, in potential trade packages for starting pitchers. The team is reportedly open to using Jones as part of a deal to acquire either Garrett Crochet from the Chicago White Sox or Tarik Skubal from the Detroit Tigers.

USA Today’s Bob Nightengale reported that the White Sox are not rushing to accept offers, instead holding out for a more substantial package from the Yankees or other interested teams. Nightengale also mentioned that the Tigers have been in discussions with both the Baltimore Orioles and Los Angeles Dodgers regarding potential trades.

Spencer Jones is currently ranked as the second-best prospect in the Yankees’ system and the 36th overall prospect in baseball. He was selected by New York with the 25th overall pick in the 2022 draft. At 23 years old, he represents a valuable asset in the Yankees’ farm system.

The White Sox are reportedly interested in packaging multiple players together in a potential trade. They are considering bundling reliever Michael Kopech and outfielder Luis Robert Jr. along with Crochet, although they are also open to trading these players individually. Crochet could potentially strengthen either the Yankees’ rotation or bullpen, while Robert Jr.’s offensive capabilities could complement the Yankees’ lineup, which already features AL MVP candidate Aaron Judge and star outfielder Juan Soto.

The Yankees’ willingness to consider trading a top prospect like Spencer Jones underscores the team’s urgency to address their pitching needs, potentially at the cost of future talent.

Yankees open to Jones swap for rotation help

In the 2024 season, Spencer Jones has been playing for the Yankees’ Double-A affiliate, Somerset. Through 75 games and 342 plate appearances, Jones has demonstrated his power potential with 10 home runs and 46 RBI. However, his batting average stands at .238, indicating room for improvement in his overall hitting.

Garrett Crochet has emerged as one of the standout pitchers in baseball this year, despite playing for a struggling White Sox team. He has achieved a career-high 150 strikeouts while maintaining an impressive 3.02 ERA and 0.95 WHIP across 20 appearances. This performance earned Crochet his first All-Star selection. At 25 years old, Crochet could significantly bolster the Yankees’ pitching staff as they aim for a deep postseason run.

According to SL.com, the Chicago White Sox's Garrett Crochet is on the Yankees' radar, but the team is hesitant to trade Spencer Jones to get him in the deal.

Tarik Skubal is also having a career-best season, posting remarkable numbers with 140 strikeouts, a 2.41 ERA, and a 0.88 WHIP in 19 appearances. His win-loss record stands at an impressive 10-3. Skubal’s performance has put him in the conversation for the Cy Young Award. Acquiring a pitcher of Skubal’s caliber would be a major coup for the Yankees, but it would likely require an aggressive approach at the trade deadline to secure his services.

Both Crochet and Skubal represent significant upgrades to the Yankees’ pitching rotation, which could be crucial for their postseason aspirations. However, the inclusion of a top prospect like Jones in any potential deal underscores the high cost of acquiring such talented pitchers in the current market.

  1. As you said in your post, what is Crochet worth it he ends up in the pen for the Yankees in 2024. To me, any trade for Crochet should include a PTBNL, depending on just how available he is here in 2024 for the rest of the regular season.

  2. Trade big if you’re going to include top prospects That means Skubal! Need to replace Nothing Nate as a LHP in the rotation
