New York Yankees 5-6 Baltimore Orioles
The Yankees’ first half of the season ended on a devastating note with a 6-5 loss to the Orioles at Camden Yards, dropping them a game behind Baltimore in the AL East.
How it happened
The Yankees took a 5-3 lead in the top of the ninth inning thanks to Ben Rice’s tharee-run homer off Craig Kimbrel. However, the bottom of the ninth proved disastrous. Clay Holmes allowed a leadoff single to Kyle Stowers, setting up a dramatic collapse. With two outs and the bases loaded, Ryan Mountcastle hit a routine grounder to shortstop that should have ended the game. Instead, Anthony Volpe’s error allowed a run to score, keeping the Orioles’ hopes alive. Cedric Mullins then hit a fly ball to left field that Alex Verdugo misjudged, resulting in a two-run double and a walk-off win for Baltimore.
Rice’s three-run homer had seemingly secured the game for the Yankees, adding to his impressive tally of six home runs in his brief major league stint. Yet, the ninth-inning errors by Volpe and Verdugo overshadowed his efforts and highlighted the Yankees’ defensive issues.
Trent Grisham, who has struggled this season, had a productive day at the plate. He drove in the Yankees’ first run with a two-out single in the second inning and later tied the game in the fifth with a solo home run. Grisham’s three-hit performance was a bright spot in an otherwise frustrating game for New York.
Carlos Rodon had a mixed outing, heavily relying on his slider. He struck out seven batters over four innings but also allowed two earned runs on four hits. Rodon’s slider was both effective and problematic, as shown by Gunnar Henderson’s home run in the third inning.
Aaron Judge reached base three times through walks and a hit-by-pitch, but the Yankees struggled to capitalize, with Verdugo failing to deliver in key moments. The lack of protection behind Judge in the lineup continues to be a concern for New York.
The Yankees enter the All-Star break with a 58-40 record, a game behind the Orioles (58-38) in the AL East. Baltimore’s victory prevented a sweep and ensured they head into the break leading the division. As the Yankees prepare for the second half of the season, they will need to address their defensive shortcomings and provide better support for their key players.
