The mathematical equations that govern the New York Yankees‘ chances of reaching the playoffs paint a rather grim picture. To put it simply, the odds are not in their favor. As of a recent Monday morning, baseball-reference.com calculated the Yankees’ playoff prospects at a mere 0.1 percent. NY Post‘s projection was slightly more optimistic, with ESPN assigning a 0.3 percent chance, while FanGraphs, perhaps aiming to uplift die-hard Yankee fans, provided a 0.4 percent chance.

As of that fateful Monday, the Yankees were faced with a daunting challenge, as their tragic number sat at seven. However, a glimmer of hope emerged on September 6, following an impressive streak of five consecutive wins and eight victories in nine games. At that point, they managed to close the gap to just six games behind the last wild-card spot. In a burst of optimism, Yankees manager Aaron Boone stated, “All we can do is keep winning,” and that’s precisely what they did, maintaining a winning percentage of .600 over the next 10 games. But what did all this effort yield? Unfortunately, not much – they only gained half a game in the wild-card race.

The football season is on a brief hiatus until Thursday, and the start of basketball and hockey is still on the horizon. While St. John’s University may be signing promising recruits, these events aren’t readily televised. Even the thrilling WNBA Finals showdown between the Liberty and the Aces may not be enough to satisfy our sports cravings. With “Winning Time,” the TV series chronicling the Lakers’ history, already over, the Yankees find themselves taking center stage in the sports world.

With three crucial home games this week, including a pivotal series against the Toronto Blue Jays, the Yankees have two teams to surpass. The Blue Jays currently maintain a one-week lead, sitting seven games ahead of the Yankees. However, these two teams are set to clash six times in the next 10 days, and while these games may not yet be deemed “critical,” Yankees fans will undoubtedly be glued to their screens.

The Yankees are facing a daunting challenge with only 12 games remaining in their season. To orchestrate a miraculous turnaround, they must accomplish the following tasks: winning five out of six games against the Blue Jays, taking two out of three from the Diamondbacks, and executing a sweep against the struggling Royals, a team destined for a significant number of losses.

If they manage to achieve these lofty goals, they will end with a 10-2 record. But even that may not be enough. For this effort to count, at least two of the three teams ahead of them need to falter.

In the case of the Toronto Blue Jays, this means going 2-10 in their final 12 games, a rather unlikely scenario given their upcoming matches against the Yankees and the still-in-the-hunt Rays. Even if they finish 3-10, the Yankees would win the tiebreaker with an 86-76 record.

Turning our attention to the Seattle Mariners and Texas Rangers, who face seven games against each other, the situation gets even more complex. The Yankees should ideally be rooting for Seattle, especially since they have three games against the A’s, who are still in contention for a high number of losses. If the Rangers continue to struggle and post a 1-6 record against the Mariners, their playoff hopes could dwindle, particularly if they fare poorly in a three-game series against the Red Sox, who have been struggling themselves. If the Rangers end up losing two out of three to the Red Sox, coupled with a 2-8 record against the Mariners and Astros, they would finish at 85-77, just one game shy of the Yankees, who hold the tiebreaker.

While the path to the playoffs remains challenging and filled with uncertainties, these late September games offer Yankees fans something to hold onto. Although they may not carry the same weight as playoff games in other sports, for the next few days, they are the sole focus of attention for fans yearning for thrilling sporting moments.
