New York Yankees 0, Boston Red Sox 3

Rafael Devers homered and the last-place Boston Red Sox defeated the first-place New York Yankees 3-0 on Sunday behind a strong start from Michael Wacha, who was making his return from a shoulder injury.

The Red Sox defeated the Yankees by a score of two games to one, led by Tommy Pham’s three hits. This was the Red Sox’s first victory in a legitimate series against an AL East opponent this season after 13 attempts.

Boston is seventh in the AL’s wild-card standings, while New York has a double-digit lead despite losing nine of its last eleven games. These two teams have a history of marathon games, but they finished this one in just 2 hours and 15 minutes.

Wacha (7-1) had a perfect game going until the fifth inning. He had been on the injured list for five weeks because of inflammation in his right shoulder. He walked one batter and struck out nine, including Aaron Judge twice, who has the most home runs in the major leagues.

Garrett Whitlock struck out Judge to end a nine-pitch at-bat and retired Josh Donaldson on a slow roller to short for his fourth save after Ryan Brasier threw a perfect eighth inning.

Jameson Taillon (11-3) took the loss for the first time since July 5 after he gave up three runs on six hits with four strikeouts.

Judge went 0 for 4 with three strikeouts, ending a streak of 14 consecutive games in which he had reached base safely. In each of the previous four games, he had taken at least two walks.

The Red Sox won the one-game series against the Orioles on Thursday, but that was their only victory in the AL East. The Red Sox are 1-11-1 in series that feature games against other divisional teams.

Gerrit Cole (9-4), the Yankees’ starting pitcher, will take the mound against the Rays.
