Yankees legends Derek Jeter, Jorge Posada, and Mariano Rivera set the stage for another historic moment in the world of sports. As the Pittsburgh Penguins embarked on their 2023-24 season with a 4-2 loss to the Chicago Blackhawks, the hockey world bore witness to something truly extraordinary. Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, and Kris Letang, the iconic trio synonymous with Penguins hockey, etched their names into North American sports lore, marking their 18th consecutive season together, a monumental achievement that extends beyond the boundaries of the hockey rink.

Surpassing a Yankee record

This remarkable achievement surpasses the legendary run of New York Yankees icons Derek Jeter, Jorge Posada, and Mariano Rivera, who enjoyed 17 seasons as teammates, cementing their place in the annals of major North American professional sports history.

Legacy of triumph

Pittsburgh’s triumphant trio began their extraordinary journey during the 2006-07 season, right after Sidney Crosby’s NHL debut. Notably, both Crosby and Malkin were No. 1 draft picks, with Crosby leading the way in 2005 and Malkin claiming the top spot the year prior.

For die-hard Penguins fans, this enduring partnership between Crosby, Malkin, and Letang is nothing short of magical. In a sports landscape characterized by constant player movement and team turnovers, their unwavering commitment to the Penguins is a testament to their dedication and exceptional skills.

Their collective accomplishments in Pittsburgh are truly remarkable. The Penguins captured the Stanley Cup in 2009, 2016, and 2017, with Crosby, Malkin, and Letang playing pivotal roles in those historic triumphs. Coach Mike Sullivan couldn’t help but sing their praises, emphasizing that they belong to an elite class of athletes. He said, “They’re generational talents, I think that speaks for itself. But all the other intangibles that they bring to the table, they just represent everything that’s great about hockey.”

Looking ahead, these three legends of the ice have at least two more seasons together. With the recent addition of defenseman Erik Karlsson to the roster, the Penguins are poised for more Stanley Cup runs, aiming to add further chapters to their storied legacy.

Sidney Crosby summed it up perfectly, saying, “It’s just special. There’s no other way to put it. It’s not easy. There are so many factors. So much turnover with teams, especially nowadays where you see that it’s so uncommon that players can stay with the same team. The fact we were able to do that, it’s really special. You appreciate that. You’re grateful for that, and hopefully, a few more years left here together.”
