Last week, general manager Brian Cashman hinted at Luis Severino’s option being picked up.
It’s official now.
On Monday, the Yankees exercised Luis Severino’s $15 million option for the 2023 season, ensuring that he will not become a free agent this offseason.
Severino is coming off his first full season in pinstripes since a three-year stretch in which he pitched in only seven games due to two significant arm injuries (including Tommy John surgery in 2020).
In 2022, the 28-year old In 2022, the 28 year old posted a 3.18 ERA in 19 starts, recapturing his form earlier in the earlier in his career when he was New York’s ace, making the All Star Game in 2017 and 2018.
This was Severino’s first full season since 2018, when he was named to the AL All-Star team for the second time in a row.
He was limited to three late- September starts in 2019 due to shoulder inflammation and a strained lat muscle, then had Tommy John surgery on Feb. 27, 2020, and made only four late-season relief appearances in 2021.
In February 2019, Severino agreed to a $40 million, four year contract that included the option with a $2.75 million buyout.
The contract is now worth $52.5 million over five seasons.
In seven major league seasons, he is 50-29 with a 3.39 ERA, striking out 709 batters in 638 innings.
