Domingo German, once a key member of the New York Yankees‘ rotation, is making a determined comeback with the Pittsburgh Pirates after a tumultuous end to his time in New York.

Since joining the Pirates, German has made four appearances, including a six-inning, scoreless start against the Texas Rangers on August 21.

“It always feels good just to be able to come back and show my talent and what I can do in the big leagues,” Germán told reporters in Arlington through a translator. “For sure, rough times [are] behind me. But now it feels good to come back and do my thing.”

Pirates manager Chris Shelton, acknowledging the team’s crowded rotation, hinted that Germán could earn more starting opportunities. So far, German has pitched 12 innings, allowing two earned runs on five hits and seven walks while striking out eight.

German’s career has been marked by significant off-field issues, which led to his departure from the Yankees. In 2019, he was suspended for 81 games for violating MLB’s domestic violence policy. Last year, he was placed on the restricted list after an alcohol-related incident in the Yankees clubhouse. Despite these setbacks, German remains focused on proving his worth.

German’s return to the majors follows a challenging stint in Triple-A, where he posted a 5.29 ERA over 68 innings. Once a rising star with the Yankees, even throwing a perfect game in 2019, German is now intent on leaving his past behind and rebuilding his career with the Pirates.

Both MLB and MLBPA has met this guy down in the past. May he have some success in lesser demanding media markets.
