Aaron Boone gave an update on LeMahieu’s situation as the infielder missed his second game in a row with a toe injury.
DJ LeMahieu was still out of the Yankees’ lineup on Monday. He missed Sunday’s loss to the Red Sox because of pain in his right big toe.
Inflammation was found in the tests, so Aaron Boone said the versatile infielder’s status is “day-to-day.”
The manager said LeMahieu’s swinging has bothered him recently, especially when he rotates on his back foot.
The Yankees are currently playing short-handed because they are not planning to put LeMahieu on the injured list. However, this is a developing situation, and the Yankees’ plans may change. Boone stated that LeMahieu would not be receiving a cortisone injection at this time.
During the All-Star break, LeMahieu received a cortisone shot, which temporarily relieved his pain.
LeMahieu downplayed his injury Sunday. Boone decided against playing the veteran on Monday against the Rays. LeMahieu’s absence allows Gleyber Torres to lead off and play second.
LeMahieu quietly shone this year after battling a sports hernia in 2021. LeMahieu slashed .279/.381/.417 with 12 homers, 43 RBI, a 135 wRC+, and 3.5 WAR in 104 games.
The only Yankee player with a higher WAR total than LeMahieu is Aaron Judge (7.4).
